Abstract
Objective: Dental survey was performed for primary school students at Gwangju-si order to evaluate the caries prevention effect of the water fluoridation for 15 years at Gwangju-si.

Methods: Five-hundred sixty-four children as 289 in age 8 years, 275 in age 10 were examined the oral health by 2 trained dentists and 3 staffs and caries experience data were collected to compare the data with the national survey.

Results: Decayed, missing, and filled teeth of permanent teeth (DMFT) index in 8 years old was 0.37 and decayed, missing, and filled surfaces of permanent teeth (DMFS) was calculated as 0.44. DMFT index in 10 years old was estimated as 0.66 and DMFS index was 0.83. Caries experience was lower in both age groups at Gwangju-si than at middle city in national survey data (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion: Caries experience was lower in children group at Gwangju-si than in national survey, so, water fluoridation for 15 years might be effective for caries prevention at Gwangju area. This is thought to be the result of the tap water fluoridation project implemented for the last 16 years and thus, it is thought to be reasonable to continue tap water fluoridation projects in the future.
